A new Jo Malone London candle strikes a note of hope for mental health

The special-edition Lily of the Valley & Ivy candle will raise funds for UK-based charities

Jo Malone London is putting the famously uplifting properties of its products to work this summer, releasing a new Lily of the Valley & Ivy home candle (£48) on July 1 in support of mental health charities. The special-edition candle’s fragrance opens with cassis and green ivy, while delicate lily of the valley and decadent narcissus add, rather aptly, a deep heart to the scent.

One in four people in the UK will be affected by mental health difficulties every year, and for each of the new candles sold in the UK and Ireland, the brand will donate 75 per cent of the retail price (excluding VAT) to organisations committed to supporting them.

Donations will go to the NSPCC; the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families, London, which is dedicated to providing training and support in mental health services for children, young people and families; Martineau Gardens, a therapeutic community garden offering wildlife and tranquillity in Birmingham; Phoenix Futures, which helps people to overcome drug and alcohol problems as well as offering residential services; Pieta House, dedicated to therapy support for issues of self-harm and suicidal thoughts; the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH); Rotunda, an educational charity in Liverpool; St Mungo’s homeless charity, which has 17 outreach teams around the country; Thrive, which uses gardening and horticulture to change the lives of the disabled and disadvantaged; and the Whitworth Art Gallery at the University of Manchester.
