The Gilbert Scott boards the British Pullman

A train adventure for Marcus Wareing’s St Pancras restaurant

Despite the context of her novel, Agatha Christie confirmed the Orient Express’ status as the most romantic train on earth. With the original model decommissioned in 2009, the British Pullman is a worthy successor, and will play host on Saturday January 25 to a gourmet Marcus Wareing dinner in celebration of all things British, tickets for which are £495. The combination of the art-deco charm of the train, as it thunders through the British countryside, and the atmosphere of Wareing’s brasserie, The Gilbert Scott at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, will make this an extraordinary one-off night.

The evening will start with the restaurant’s signature cocktail, the 1873, containing gin, apple, cranberry and rhubarb charged with CO2, served at Victoria station by The Gilbert Scott bar manager, Dav Eames.

All aboard, and Chantelle Nicholson, Wareing’s chef protégé and general manager of the restaurant on terra firma, will host the evening. “The atmosphere will be one of pure enjoyment, with myself, Marcus and Dav chatting to guests in the carriages about the menu and the cocktails,” she says. “To me, it is stepping back in time a little, with the elegance of the train and the fun of The Gilbert Scott entwined.”

Wareing’s own enthusiasm has the ring of a boy who may just have dreamed of driving a locomotive one day: “To be able to take the restaurant on board one of the most spectacular trains ever to be born out of Great Britain is an honour and extremely exciting.” Over seven courses, his locally sourced food will sit alongside the beauty of these original carriages as it is served by liveried stewards.

All will be prepared in the train’s narrow galley kitchen – quite the opposite of Wareing’s other restaurants (including the two-Michelin-starred Marcus Wareing at The Berkley Hotel).   However, Robbie Gleeson, executive head chef of the British Pullman, will be on hand to make sure there are no bumps on this culinary ride.
